EU Commission doesn’t support Alexela and Gasum's LNG terminal projects

BC, Tallinn, 02.10.2014.Print version
The European Commission decided not to support Alexela Energia and Finnish energy company Gasum joint projects for building liquefied natural gas, or LNG terminals along the Gulf of Finland; both companies announced that they will continue with the terminal building plan, searching for other solutions, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

"Yesterday representatives of the European Commission, the Finnish ministry and LNG project had a meeting in Tallinn, and looked for ways of going ahead on the basis of the memorandum of common intentions concluded in February, which sought ways to form a joint venture between Alexela and Gasum and build the regional terminal," said Estonian Economy and Communications Ministry Energy Department Manager Timo Tatar.

"At yesterday's meeting, it was stated that negotiations to form the joint venture have so far yielded no results and, therefore, they will go forward now separately, either a large terminal on one side or on the other side," he continued.

Tatar said that the Estonian state has relied on the principle that the project is supported that has the fastest completion date, is capable of bringing competitive gas price to the market, and the developers of which are independent of the current dominant gas supplier. "In this sense, we will continue to support and we hope that there will be a regional terminal and it will be sooner rather than later," said Tatar.
