Latvian MFA: goal to reduce emissions by 40% is "ambitious"

BC, Riga, 30.09.2014.Print version
The goal to reduce emissions by 40% is ambitious, therefore, it is important to consider how this venture will affect each member state individually, Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Unity) said during the European Union's (EU) General Affairs Council in Brussels yesterday, cites LETA.

Rinkevics, accompanied by a delegation, stressed that the EU climate policy goal to reduce emissions caused by the greenhouse effect by 40%, must provide "fair distribution among the member states." Rinkevics also emphasized the necessity to continue discussion among the task forces.

The impact of the council's decision on each member state is yet to be assessed.

The council discussed the October 23-24 European Council, during which government officials will discuss the EU climate and energy policy, the economic situation in the EU, as well as several foreign affairs matters in regard to recent global developments.

"We are ready to come to an agreement about the EU climate policy, however, it has to be honest. The goal to reduce emissions in the EU by 40% is ambitious, therefore, it is important to consider how this task will affect each member state individually," the minister indicated.

Ministers also participated in a discussion on strategic growth and competitiveness. During the discussion, ministers focused on various aspects, such as the coordination of economic policy, facilitation of investments, matters concerning employment, surveillance of financial aid, creation of a joint digital and domestic market, improvement of legal regulations, consolidation of innovations, matters concerning tax payments, as well as the foreign trade field.

The EU strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian region was also discussed.

The meetings of the General Affairs Council are held on a monthly basis. In the second half of 2014, the General Affairs Council's meetings are chaired by Italy.
