The Latvian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, OSCE and other International Organizations in Vienna, Bahtijors Hasans, was elected as Vice-President of the 58th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), informs BC Latvia MFA.

The General Conference is taking place in Vienna from 22 to 26 September. The Vice- President’s duties are to stand in for and support the President of the General Committee, as well as reviewing the member state accreditations.

The General Conference is the highest policy-making and decision-making body, and the major annual event of the IAEA. In the course of the Conference, the IAEA’s priorities and budget are considered and approved. The Conference approves membership applications from states, fills the seats on the IAEA Board and reviews other important topics on the agency’s agenda, for instance, cooperation with the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, and the application of security safeguards in the Middle East.

Resolutions on the topics within the IAEA competence are considered and approved during the Conference. The resolutions of the foremost importance for Latvia are those on cyber security and technical cooperation. Projects on technical cooperation in the field of radiation security and surveillance capacity will be carried out in Latvia this year. The project will be implemented in close cooperation between the IAEA and the Radiation Security Centre of the State Environmental Service. The Agency provides an opportunity for its member states to take part in research projects. This year, the Agency has also decided to finance a medical research project in Latvia.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is an organisation the principal aim of which is to encourage non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and promote the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Latvia has been an IAEA member state since 1997.
