Latvian Saeima approves mechanisms to compensate needy residents for of electricity price growth

Saeima passed amendments to the Electricity Market Law in the final reading today, the amendments stipulate mechanisms to compensate low-income earners, needy residents, and large families for electricity price growth, reports LETA.

The proposal introduced by Saeima's Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee stipulates a new term in the Electricity Market Law – "protected consumer". The term applies to households and large families classified as low-income residents.

 

From January 1, 2015 until December 31, 2015, Latvenergo will be the company responsible for providing services to "protected consumers". From January 1, 2015, this responsibility will be handed over to a company that will win the tender.

 

In 2015, low-income residents will have to pay EUR 0.1164 for 100 kilowatt-hours a month, whereas large families will be able to pay the "Start" tariff for up to 300 kilowatt-hours per month.
