Lithuanian PM: NPP may be constructed only with regional partners

BC, Vilnius, 02.09.2014.Print version
According to Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius, a nuclear power plant in Lithuania can only be constructed with a contribution of regional partners, reports LETA/ELTA.

"My position is that the project can only be implemented together with our regional partners. Right now negotiations are being conducted with Latvia. As you know, Lithuania's Ministry of Energy has signed an agreement with the Japanese company Hitachi, it has to assess the project, especially after the synchronisation study is completed, and to seek for opportunities to cut costs of the project in economic sense. Today there is no one definite answer," Butkevicius told the national radio LRT on Tuesday.

As reported, last week the Lithuanian Energy Institute introduced the revised Lithuania's energy strategy providing two options how the energy sector can develop – nuclear and non-nuclear.

The prime minister said the Energy Ministry was instructed to coordinate the project with other institutions, then the study will be introduced in the Government and later will move to Parliament.
