BC, Tallinn, 15.07.2014.Print version
The Estonian government launched last December the environmental impact assessment of the Balticconnector gas pipeline between Estonia and Finland, which was now approved of with the decision of the Estonian Environment Minister, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

According to the approved programme, the evaluation of the environmental impact will be carried out in cooperation with Finland because the pipeline passes through both the Estonian and Finnish economic zone.

According to preliminary plans, the pipeline will reach land in the town of Paldiski in the Pakri Peninsula in Estonia. In Finland, the pipeline reaches land in Inkoo. The final pipeline route will be determined on the basis of different studies, including the environmental impact assessment report. The report will be revealed in May next year, when all residents have the opportunity to examine the report and submit their comments.

"Balticconnector provides an opportunity for bonding markets and increases the confidence of Estonian consumers, our energy security. Construction of the gas pipeline between Estonia and Finland in the Estonian seabed involves significant dredging and filling work. Therefore, it is important to have thorough preparatory work done and know the impact of the planned activities on the environment and ways of easing it," said Minister of the Environment Keit Pentus-Rosimannus.
