Presidential candidates support construction of NPP in Lithuania

President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite and social democratic nominee Zigmantas Balcytis support the construction of nuclear power plant (NPP) in Lithuania, reports LETA/ELTA.

In Thursday's presidential debates, Grybauskaite said that the main reason for not building the Visaginas NPP yet is the lack of political will. "This project would be in principle very beneficial to the whole region, if there were political will and ability to carry out such strategic project. So far I see none of them," said Grybauskaite.

According to Balcytis, nuclear energy will remain economically and ecologically the most attractive energy source for many years. In his opinion, it is possible to turn the Visaginas NPP into a political project of the European Union (EU). "I am certain that it is possible to convince the EU to make it a political project," said Balcytis.

Meanwhile, Grybauskaite held position that the EU would not finance any projects related to nuclear energy in coming decades. "Yet it is not of much importance. If there was will, determination and knowledge, it would be enough for a country to manage on its own. Yet we lack political will and abilities. Politicians have not only to want it but also to know how it should be managed. So far we cannot see it," said the president.
