Latvia won’t be the partner in Visaginas NPP's construction without economic motivation

BC, Riga, 13.05.2014.Print version
Latvia will not participate in the development of the Visaginas NPP construction project, until it receives the economic motivation for financial partnership in construction of the plant, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) informed the Latvian delegation of the Baltic Assembly today.

In order to solve the issue of Baltic isolation from the power industry, one of the most urgent and important tasks for Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia is the expansion of inter-connective networks. Representatives of the delegation and Straujuma agreed on this. Both parties met in order to discuss the cooperation between the Baltic Assembly and the Baltic Council of Ministers, the Saeima Press Service informed LETA.

The development of Visaginas NPP construction project is still unclear, head of the Latvian delegation Janis Vucans (Green Party) said, thus, in April, the Baltic Assembly requested that all Baltic States' economy ministers would submit explanations. Straujuma confirmed that Latvia will take no part in the Visaginas NPP construction project without the economic motivation for financial partnership.

One of the assembly's top priorities this year is the improvement of region innovations and competitive capacity, however, the discussion center holds joint innovation platform for several years, Vucans said. Nevertheless, the alternative could be joint Baltic States involvement in the European Institute of Innovation and Technology because the current capacity of science and research centers in every state is too low to participate in this institute.

Co-chairman of the Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Committeee, Vitalijs Orlovs (Harmony Center) stressed that the Latvian-Estonian cooperation in providing cross-border medical services is successfully carried out, however, more ways are required in order to implement this mechanism in the cooperation with Lithuania.
