Lithuania's renewable energy resources development program labelled unambitious

BC, Vilnius, 22.04.2014.Print version
Representatives of business and energy sector are criticising the national renewable energy resources program. Experts say the document is declarative, is set to meet only the minimum EU requirements and in no way contributes ensuring the country's energy independence. Therefore, it has to be redrafted, informs LETA/ELTA.

The goal of the program is to establish target consumption of renewable energy resources in the sectors of electrical energy, heat energy and transportation, and to foresee certain measures how to achieve the indicators. The program will be implemented in 2014-2020.

"The present version of the program does not foresee continuity of fundamental transformation and actual steps towards energy independence. Today's situation was not taken into account when writing the program. For example, the necessity to reduce electricity import and to take care of energy security," says President of Lithuanian Business Confederation Algimantas Akstinas. According to him, such unambitious project in no way contributes to achieve partial energy independence by 2020 and complete energy independence by 2030.

President of Lithuanian Confederation of Renewable Resources Martynas Nagevicius notes that there are no provisions in the program related to development of renewable energy resources but solely implementation of ongoing projects. The only goal reflected in the program, according to Nagevicius, is that after the launched projects are completed, Lithuania will meet the minimum EU requirements established in the EU directive on renewable energy resources.
