Fortum Klaipeda doesn’t bring much price reduction for heating

Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 18.06.2013.Print version
While implementing the project of Fortum Klaipeda power-station, which gets the heat from burning waste and biofuel, the focus was put on the possibility to gain independence from Russian gas and to reduce the heat price in Lithuania, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaru ekspresas.

The latter has already been decreasing; however the drop in prices is not as significant as residents of Klaipeda have expected.

The forecast for forthcoming heating season announced by the National Control Commission for Prices and Energy (VKEKK) is not promising. According to VKEKK representatives, the forecast reflects only the certified margin of the decrease in heat price, while the actual drop in prices will be noticeable during the heating season.

It is possible that the prices of heat will be reduced more than expected. The experts point out that the laws established by the previous office of the Seimas oblige the producers of heat to buy heat from independent generators if it is below their cost. It is believed that if there is any opportunity left to bargain, there is a chance to achieve a greater drop in prices than it is offered by today's market.
