Lithuanian PM: NPP plan up to Estonians and Latvians

BC, Tallinn, 28.05.2013.Print version
Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said while meeting with Baltic journalists on Tuesday that new calculations have been made in the Lithuanian nuclear power plant project, and now the much talked about project is waiting for decisions of foreign partners, LETA/Delfi reports.

Butkevicius said that an important issue is the competitiveness of the future nuclear power plant, according to current studies, the price of the electric energy from the nuclear power plant wouldn't be competitive at the market.

"I believe that every political decision has to be based on economic considerations," he said.

"If our partners make a positive decision (knowing that the price of electricity will be higher than that at the Nord Pool electricity market) then these partners have to take bigger responsibility for the cost of the project," he noted.

Butkevicius answered in affirmative to the question of whether Lithuania would start building the nuclear power plant if Estonia and Latvia join the new evaluations.

"We are waiting for answers from our regional partners by July 1 on what their future plans are," he said.
