Energy was one of the main topics of the European Council meeting. Ansip said in his speech that the potential in local sources of energy should be utilized more, including unorthodox sources of energy (like shale oil) and renewable energy. "Wider use of local sources of energy helps to reduce the dependency on imports and stimulate economic growth," said Ansip. "That means bigger economic benefits."

Anisp also stressed the need of the EU to stick to the climate policy aims it has set. "But at the same time, fulfilling them cannot endanger the economic growth, employment and innovation."

Ansip also pointed out the need for development of the internal energy market, creating connection between grids that would make the so-called "energy islands" disappear. "A fully integrated energy market guarantees our energy independence and supply reliability and gives a feeling of security to investors," said Ansip.
