Estonian and Finland: LNG terminal location will be determined by independent assessor

BC, Tallinn, 20.05.2013.Print version
Estonian economy and communications minister Juhan Parts and Finnish economy minister Jan Vapaavuori agreed at their meeting in Tallinn on Wednesday that in order for treatment of the competing liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal projects of Estonia and Finland to be equal, it is reasonable to carry out an independent assessment by the European Commission, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

The ministers agreed that the states would send a proposal to the European Commission in the next few days who could give an unbiased evaluation to three LNG projects located by the Baltic Sea.

Parts and Vapaavuori say that both states will accept the proposal of the unbiased assessor.

The ministers stressed that the most important thing is to proceed, so that an LNG-terminal, Balticconnector gas pipeline link would be built in the region and that the financing of the project would reach the European Union first energy infrastructure finance round. "The situation should end that Estonian and Finnish gas markets are isolated. Competition must emerge at the market," said Parts.

The big regional LNG terminal would cost 300-500 million euros and would supply the three Baltic states.

An earlier analysis by the European Commission stated that the most suitable locations would be Paldiski or Muuga in Estonia and Inkoo in Finland.
