High-level radiation in Belarus' plant does not cause danger to Lithuania
Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 13.09.2012.Print version
Lithuania's Radiation Protection Centre (RSG) under the Ministry of Health says that radiation above an acceptable level at the Grodno Thermal Power Plant in neighbouring Belarus does not cause any danger to Lithuania.
"Lithuanian residents can rest assured that this event will not mean any additional exposure to radiation," the RSG said.
A state of emergency has been announced in the Belarusian plant as the ionizing radiation dose rate there 50 times exceeds the natural radiation level. The rate increased up to 6-10 mSv/h because of a metal construction brought from India, writes LETA/ELTA.
"However, the ionizing radiation dose 2 metres away from the construction does not exceed the natural level. It is thought that a radioactively contaminated metal was used to built the construction," the RSG said.
