On Monday, the Centre of Excellence (COE) for Nuclear Security will be officially opened at the Border Guard School located in Medininkai, Vilnius District.

It will be one of the centres of excellence for nuclear security united by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), writes LETA/ELTA.

The main objective of such a centre is development of infrastructure for training and exercises in nuclear security as well as consolidation of interaction and collaboration.

The opening ceremony will be attended by representatives from Japanese, Polish, Russian, Latvian, Hungarian, Chinese, Turkish, Belarusian, German, American and Austrian diplomatic missions in Lithuania.

The centre established on April 1 is a contribution to the global community's fight against nuclear terrorism and smuggling, and to the prevention of these extremely dangerous criminal offences.

This year, on March 26-27, Lithuania was invited to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea for the first time. Then, the IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano promised to help and support the Lithuanian COE for Nuclear Security.
