After several new electricity interconnections are built, their total capacity combined with that of Estlink will be nearly the same as that of the Baltic countries' interconnections with Russia and Belarus, the power utility Latvenergo told Nozare.lv.

According to the company's data, the total capacity of the Baltic countries' interconnections with Russia and Belarus is 3,100 megawatts, while the combined capacity of Estlink and the other planned interconnections – around 2,700 MW, writes LETA.

The company explains that the difference is in the number of the interconnections: there are 11 high-voltage interconnections with Russia and Belarus, whereas the new interconnections will be just five. The larger number of interconnections also ensures greater power supply security, notes Latvenergo.

According to Latvenergo's data, there is an interconnection of 400 MW between Latvia and Russia, and three of 1,000 MW between Estonia and Russia. Two lines of 600 MW connect Lithuania and Russia, and there are five lines with a capacity of 1,100 MW between Lithuania and Belarus.

Estonia and Finland are connected by the Estlink cable with a capacity of 350 MW, and another cable is being built now that will have a capacity of 650 MW. The capacity of an interconnection to be built from Lithuania to Sweden is 700 MW, and two interconnections between Lithuania and Poland will have a combined capacity of 1,000 MW.
