Estonia will continue a pragmatic line in the energy issues, focusing on oil shale, wind and timber, World Energy Council Estonian committee secretary general Mihkel Härm and economy and communications ministry acting energy deputy chancellor Ando Leppiman think, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

A discussion will be launched today at the conference "Updating the energy strategy of the Estonian state" on the future of the Estonian energy industry. Härm said that different interest groups attend the conference – supporters of wind energy and nuclear power plant and attempts will be made to reach a reasonable solution.

"The fundamental presumptions are that first, we need energy. And second, that the strengths of Estonian energy sphere are good foreign connections and knowhow of oil shale. And if we want to sell oil shale knowhow outside, we have to use it at home," said Härm.

At the end of the year the EU revealed energy strategy till 2050 which doesn’t favour use of oil shale as the main electric energy production resource. Estonia has local energy resources oil shale, biomass and wind but we have to decide where our electricity will come from in the future.

Leppiman said that oil shale will continue till 2050 definitely and since the world has an energy hunger, oil shale certainly has its place in the energy industry.
