The Latvian president also added that he is not against the use of nuclear energy in the Baltic region and is a supporter of the joint-Baltic nuclear power plant project, however, he wishes for the power plant to constructed as safely as possible, so that nothing like what happened in Chernobyl could repeat, LETA was informed by the president's press secretary Ilze Rassa.

''I had the privilege to visit Chernobyl twice – once as a young doctor as part of the relief team, and once several years later,'' said Zatlers, who added that he would like to visit the site of the disaster again some day.

As reported, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland are aiming to build a nuclear power plant in Lithuania together sometime in the future.

This year is the 24th anniversary since the world's largest nuclear accident in the former Soviet city of Chernobyl, located in Ukraine. Over 6,000 persons from Latvia were sent in to deal with the fallout of the accident, with many of them suffering long-term health problems due to radiation poisoning.
