Lithuania's Kaunas HPP restricts production due to low water levels
BC, Vilnius, 21.07.2020.Print version
Power production at Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant is being restricted as recent dry weather has caused water levels in the River Nemunas to drop, reported LETA/BNS.
Less than 112 cubic meters of water per second enter the Kaunas Reservoir since Friday, therefore, only aggregate at the hydropower plant is partially working, producing 18 MW of power (the power plant's total capacity stands at 100 MW), Ignitis Grupe (Ignitis Group), Lithuania's state-owned energy group, said.
"Water levels in the River Nemunas near Kaunas are dropping. It's not an exceptional phenomenon during the dry time of the year but we need to reduce power production at Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant and we cannot release more water in the Nemunas," Rimgaudas Kalvaitis, CEO at Ignitis Gamyba, which is operating the power facility, said.
