GIPL-related HDD work under River Neris completed in Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 03.07.2020.Print version
Horizontal directional drilling under the River Neris has been completed in Lithuania as part of the Lithuanian-Polish gas pipeline (GIPL) project. The gas pipeline section has been installed under the riverbed to reduce environmental impact and connected to already laid pipes 20 meters below the surface, Lithuania's gas transmission system operator Amber Grid said, cites LETA/BNS.

Specialists from Germany's LMR Drilling did the job and are set to move to the next stage involving HDD work under the River Nemunas near Punia, Alytus District. Work here is scheduled to last until August.

"The construction of the gas pipeline is moving faster than planned. We have secured funding for the project, and the completed difficult HDD stage lets us hope to successfully carry out the pipeline's construction work under Lithuania's biggest river," Nemunas Biknius, CEO at Amber Grid, said in a statement.

Expected to be completed by the end of 2021, the Lithuanian-Polish gas pipeline (GIPL) will integrate the Baltic states and Finland into the wider EU gas market. It will diversify gas supply sources, and increase security and reliability of supply for Lithuania and the region. The pipeline will go through nine municipalities in Lithuania.

It is being constructed by Lithuania's Gelvora in cooperation with Siauliu Dujotiekio Statyba, with pipes supplied by Poland's Izostal. The project involves own, EU and borrowed funds.
