Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 13.05.2008.Print version
The former Corruption Prevention Bureau's Head of the Investigation Department Ilmars Bode, who is charged with divulging secret information, has been elected assistant to Adrians Davis, chairman of the board at the joint-stock natural gas company Latvijas gaze (Latvian Gas).

As it appears, Bode's duties involve counseling in security related matters. Press spokesman at Latvian Gas Vincents Makaris, was ironically brief, when asked about Bode's responsibilities at the company, saying : "He's working". He refused to provide any further comment for now, as newspaper Diena reports today

Although Bode is not a member of the People's Party, he is regarded as connected to this political force. Bode is believed to have triggered off the first serious conflict between the former prime minister and leader of the People's Party, Aigars Kalvitis, and head of the Corruption Prevention Bureau, Aleksejs Loskutovs. The conflict culminated in autumn last year when Kalvitis dismissed Loskutovs and later lost the premier's office himself.

The conflict between Bode and Loskutovs begun in spring 2005, when Loskutovs suspended Bode from the duties due to suspicion on him being intoxicated with alcohol while at work. Bode denied the charges, declaring that he was taking medicine. Kalvitis got involved in the case and ordered Loskutovs to reinstate Bode in his position. Loskutovs refused to do so, however, Bode did resume the office, following court's decision.

At the end of year 2006, a criminal process was launched against Bode, he was accused of divulging secret information. There were suspicions that Bode informed Riga Vidzeme District Court Judge Irena Polikarpova about the interception of her telephone conversations, which was organized to investigate a bribery case. Polikarpova was later sentenced to eight years in prison on bribery charges. At the present moment, following the prosecutor's request, the court has announced a time-out in Bode's case. The investigation will resume on June 9.
