Estonia: Number of households without electricity reaches over 9,000 due to strong winds

Over 9,000 households in Estonia have suffered power cuts by Wednesday morning because of high winds, which started gaining speed on Tuesday evening, reported LETA/BNS.

At 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, the number of disconnected households was 770 in various locations over Estonia, at 7 a.m. 3,432, at 7:40 a.m 6,659 and by 10:50 a.m., the number of power outages had reached 9,445, electricity distribution system operator Elektrilevi said.


The national weather service has issued a Level 2 storm alert for many northern and western counties for Wednesday, which means that weather conditions may prove dangerous to people.


The weather service has forecast snow and blizzard across Estonia for Wednesday. North wind is forecast to speed to 10-15 meters per second and to 20 meters per second in gusts; in the area of Estonia's western islands and western mainland, wind speed of 17-22 meters per second and 27 meters per second in gusts can be expected. On the islands' coastal areas, the wind is forecast to reach 30 meters per second in gusts. The wind is likely to break branches and brittle trees .
