PrintAmount of gas pumped out of Incukalns underground storage facility has increased three times in past week

BC, Riga, 29.11.2018.
As colder weather has set it, the amount of natural gas pumped out of the Incukalns underground gas storage facility has increased three times to nine million cubic meters a day, said Dace Baltabola, a representative of Latvia’s Conexus Baltic Grid (Conexus) natural gas and storage operator LETA.

A week ago, the amount pumped out of the storage facility reached 2.8 mln cubic meters.

Conexus representative underscored that even though the facility is filled up to 60 percent of its capacity this year, there is a sufficient amount of gas for Latvia’s consumers. At the same time, any season may come with unexpected challenges and the storage facility should be ready for them.

"The natural gas market and supply is closely related with weather conditions. Therefore the facility should be ready for different scenarios. Conexus is working with natural gas merchants, decision makers to ensure mechanisms that makes the facility ready for long-term colds," said Conexus board chairwoman Zane Kotane.

The amount of active gas in the Incukalns storage facility at the end of the pumping season in 2018 was by 1.5 terawatt hours lower than in 2017. Conexus said that the current situation, however, does not require immediate action because the company is constantly monitring the situation.

Conexus Baltic Grid, which has taken over natural gas storage and transmission functions from Latvijas Gaze, was established on December 22, 2016. Conexus is Latvia’s natural gas transmission and storage operator managing the Underground Gas Storage facility in Incukalns and the gas transmission system connecting the Latvian gas market with Lithuania, Estonia and the northwestern region of Russia.

Conexus belongs to Augstsprieguma Tikls (34.36%), Gazprom (34.1%) and Marguerite Gas I (29.06%).
