Alexela: Estonia loses EUR 50 mln of fuel excise duty receipts annually

BC, Tallinn, 09.11.2017.Print version
According to a member of the board of Alexela Group, Alan Vaht, the state loses 50 million euros a year due to raising the fuel excise duty, the daily Postimees reports, cites LETA/BNS.

According to Vaht, the state excise duty receipt forecast is wrong and the state loses around 50 million euros of fuel excise duty receipts a year. "This is proven by data published by the Latvian State Revenue Service, according to which Latvia's diesel fuel market has grown by 10 million liters compared to 2015," Vaht said.

According to data published by the Estonian Tax and Customs Board, in the past four months 15.7 million liters less of diesel fuel has been taken from excise duty warehouses than in the same period in 2015, amounting to a decline of 6.5%. At the same time, it is forecast in the 2018 state budget that fuel excise duty receipts are to decrease by 4.3% this year, from 554 million to 530.3 million euros.

In 2016 diesel fuel consumption fell 2.3% in Estonia, it can be seen from data published by Statistics Estonia. In Latvia the price of diesel is 10-15 cents cheaper per liter than in Estonia, therefore transport companies prefer to refuel in Latvia.

In addition, a lot of fuel was stocked up before the excise duty rise and some of it is still being consumed, Vaht said.
