Electricity price jumps to EUR 50 after start of repairs Lithuania-Sweden NordBalt link

Disconnection of the Lithuania-Sweden power link NordBalt for planned repairs has caused a significant increase of electricity price on the Lithuanian and Latvian markets, reports LETA/BNS.

Nord Pool electricity market said that electricity in Lithuania and Latvia costs 50.36 euros per kilowatt-hour on Monday, which is an increase by about 40% from the ordinary level. In Estonia, the price stands at 48.24 euros.


"This is traditional planned maintenance conducted once a year," Gabriele Klusiene, manager of communications projects at Litgrid, told.


Valentas Neviera, spokesman for Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba (Lithuanian Energy Production), confirmed to that Unit Nine of the Lithuanian power plant had been activated on Monday after the price hike.


Launched in early 2016, the NordBalt interconnection was closed for repairs on Saturday and should go back online on June 18.
