Latvia supports the synchronization of the Baltic electricity networks with continental Europe via Poland, Lithuania's Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas said after discussing the issue with Latvia's Vice-PM and Economics Minister Arvils Aseradens on Thursday.

"About the synchronization and the course, the minister confirmed and we agreed that the course we are discussing – the continental Europe link via Poland – is an acceptable option and the agreed Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan ( BEMIP ) is suitable," Vaiciunas told after the meeting.

Last week, members of t he European Network of Transmission System Operators ( ENTSO -E) agreed that the power grids of the Baltic states should be synchronized with Europe via Poland. However, it remains unclear whether it would require the second interconnection LitPol Link. Litgrid, the Lithuanian energy transmission operator, recently said that a single line that is already in operation should be enough, if its capacity is boosted to 1,000 mega-watts. Meanwhile, Poland stated it had no plans of building the second line, suggesting laying a sea cable instead.
