Lithuania-Sweden power link offline again due to cable fault

BC, Vilnius, 14.02.2017.Print version
The NordBalt power interconnection between Lithuania and Sweden is out of service again due to a cable fault, writes LETA/BNS.

Lithuania' power transmission system operator said in a message to the Nord Pool power exchange that the link had gone offline on Monday evening and was expected to be back in service by Wednesday midnight.

Gabriele Klusiene, communications project manager at Litgrid, told that the cable fault had occurred on the Swedish side, adding that further details were not yet available

Valentas Neviera, spokesman for Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba (Lithuanian Energy Production), told that the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant's reserve had been activated on Tuesday morning.

He added that there were no immediate plans to switch on the Elektrenai power plant's Unit Nine.

The NordBalt interconnection was offline for around 24 hours between last Thursday and Friday. Klusiene said that this had been due to a disconnection of the control system at the Nybro converter station in Sweden.

This followed a week-long outage of the power link in mid-January and a 12-hour outage in early January.
