The average price of electricity in Nord Pool Spot's Lithuanian bidding area rose by 12 percent last week from a week earlier to 40.9 euros per megawatt-hour as a cold snap boosted power demand, Litgrid said LETA/BNS on Monday.

"Amid the cold spell, electricity consumption in the Baltic countries went up by 4% and local power plants generated 8% more electricity. Wind power output more than doubled (in the region) and trebled in Lithuania alone. Heat and power plants' output increased by 6%, too," the power transmission system operator said in a press release.

Almost 100% of the cross-border interconnection capacity between Lithuania and Belarus was used at some points last week. The NordBalt power interconnection between Lithuania and Sweden was offline for more than 24 hours due to an outage of the control systems at the Nybro converter station on Feb/ 9-10.

Lithuania last week imported 78%  of its electricity, with 26% of imports coming from Latvia, Estonia and Finland, 23% from Sweden and slightly more than 50%  from third countries.
