The plans of the new Estonian coalition government that is about to be sworn in on Wednesday include raising the excise duty on natural gas by almost half in 2018 and by as much as 134% by 2020, informs LETA/BNS.

The rate of the tax is set to rise by approximately 20%  from 33.77 euros to 40.52 euros per 1,000 cubic meters next year. In 2018 it will rise to 50.65 euros and in 2019 to 63.32 euros. The biggest leap will take place in 2020, when the rate will surge to 79.14 euros, it appears from a table published by the Finance Ministry.

The manager of Eesti Gaas, Ants Noot, has previously told that in accordance with the new rates natural gas would cost about 20% more in 2020 than it does now. "For instance, a private home using 2,000 cubic meters of gas for heating per year will be paying 109 euros more in 2020," he said.

The new coalition has decided to leave the excise duty on diesel unchanged for the next three years by canceling the rise from 49.3 cents to 54.2 cents per liter scheduled for 2018. Besides the rise in the fuel excise duty scheduled for the beginning of 2017 will be put forward until the beginning of February. The currently valid excise duty rate for diesel is 44.8 cents per liter.
