EC likely to synchronize Baltic states via Poland

BC, Vilnius, 22.11.2016.Print version
The European Commission's (EC) Joint Research Center is moving towards the conclusion that the Baltic electricity systems should be synchronized with Western Europe via Poland by way of constructing the second power link, LitPol Link, Lithuania's Energy Vice-Minister Aleksandras Spruogis says LETA/BNS.

The preliminary expert conclusion is that the synchronization would be the most efficient via Poland in terms of costs – via the LitPol Link 2 line," Spruogis told after attending a meeting of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan ( BEMIP ) countries in Brussels on Monday.

He said he could not yet comment on the preliminary study before final conclusions have been received.

"The conclusions are yet to be presented at the BEMIP technical committee on Dec. 15, so the relevant declaration should be made at a meeting of ministers in early January," said the vice-minister.

The Joint Research Center analyzes a few alternative ways of ensuring synchronized operations of the Baltic energy systems with the West, namely, via Poland by way of two LitPol Link lines, by one line after its capacity is doubled from 500 to 1,000 megawatts or via Finland by connecting to the Nordic electricity system.

After the final decision on the synchronization is made, the European N etwork of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) will issue technical connection conditions, and implemetantion thereof would make it possible for the Baltic countries to synchronize their networks with Western Europe. Furthermore, the three countries together with the European Commission would have to open talks with Russia and Belarus on disconnection from the BRELL power ring
