Lithuania's Achema contests EU decision to approve aid to Klaipeda LNG terminal

BC, Vilnius, 03.11.2016.Print version
Lithuania's fertilizer producer Achema, the country's single largest natural gas consumer, has appealed the European Commission's decision to authorize state aid to the Klaipeda liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to the EU General Court, writes LETA/BNS.

Gintaras Balciunas, Achema's lawyer and chairman of the management board at Achemos Grupe, told  that the company turned to the court on Jul. 20 and that the court later accepted its appeal.

"We contested the European Commission's decision of 2013. It authorized state aid for the construction of the LNG terminal. In our opinion, not all information was disclosed to the Commission," Balciunas said.

"We believe that a part of important information was not disclosed by Lithuania, including that Achema had been denied permission to build a terminal of its own. Also, in our opinion, the (Klaipeda LNG terminal's) capacity is larger than Lithuania needs. We believe that exact data on the actual use and prospects for the use of the terminal were not disclosed," he said.
