Sweco Lietuva to look into possible route for 2nd Lithuania-Poland power link

BC, Vilnius, 15.09.2016.Print version
Lithuania and Poland are starting to analyze possible routes for a second LitPol Link power interconnection between the countries as part of preparations for synchronizing the Baltic electricity grids with the Continental European network, reports LETA/BNS.

The engineering and consulting company Sweco Lietuva has won a 24,000-euro contract to conduct a study on a possible route in Lithuania, the power transmission system operator Litgrid said on Thursday.

"The new electricity line to Poland is necessary for preparation for the synchronization of the Baltic electrical energy systems with Western European grids. For the electricity system to operate reliably in a synchronous mode, at least two lines should connect Lithuania to Poland," said Litgrid CEO Daivis Virbickas.

It is planned that the new interconnection could be built from Marijampole, in southern Lithuania, to the border to Poland.

Sweco Lietuva is expected to propose at least four options for the route of the line, with the initial findings of the study expected to be available in December.

PSE Inwestycje, a subsidiary of Poland's power transmission system operator PSE, is carrying out a similar study in the neighboring country.

A feasibility study conducted by Sweden's consultancy Gothia Power in 2013 on the Baltic countries' integration in the EU market identified a second power link between Lithuania and Poland as one of the preconditions for synchronization.

The Baltic countries aim to synchronize their energy systems with the Western European network by 2025.
