Electricity prices in Lithuania rise as supply falls

BC,Vilnius, 02.08.2016.Print version
The average price of electricity in Nord Pool Spot's Lithuanian bidding area jumped by one-fourth last week from a week ago to reach 40.4 euros per megawatt-hours (MWh), Litgrid said on Tuesday, reports LETA/BNS.

Y-o-y, however, the average price fell by 13% the power transmission system operator said.

"Electricity prices held steady for most of the week before jumping twofold on Friday. The rise was due to a decline in domestic supply and limited import capacities," Litgrid said.

"The Lithuanian Power Plant went offline on Thursday. The Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant did not produce electricity on Friday either. Wind power generation in all Baltic countries halved compared with the week before," it added.

Lithuania last week imported 88% of its electricity, with imports on Friday soaring to as much as 94%.

39% of electricity imports came from Latvia, Estonia and Finland, 21% from Sweden and 40% from third countries.

Import capacities from Sweden decreased after the NordBalt interconnection went offline on Tuesday evening and imports from Latvia were limited by maintenance work.
