Extraction of oil shale in Estonia totals 14.9 mln tons in 2015

A total of 14.9 million tons of oil shale was extracted in Estonia in 2015 and losses totaled 4.6 million euros, while a year earlier 15 million tons of oil shale was extracted and losses totaled 4.2 million tons, it can be seen from data published by the Land Board, cites LETA/BNS.

A total of 74.3% of the extracted oil shale or 11.1 million tons was extracted by Eesti Energia Kaevandused AS, while 17.7% or 2.6 million tons were extracted by VKG Kaevandused OU, 7.4% or 1.1 million tons by Kivioli Keemiatoostuse Varad OU, and 0.6% or 91,600 tons by Kunda Nordic Tsement AS. A year earlier the share of Eesti Energia Kaevandused was 77.6%.

 

At present, the number of valid permits for the extraction of mineral resources in Estonia exceed 600, while the number of mineral deposits registered in the Environmental Register was 905 as on Dec. 31, 2015.

 

Under the Earth's Crust Act, dolostone, phosphate rock, lacustrine lime, lake mud, crystalline building stone, gravel, sand, limestone, sea mud, oil shale, clay and peat that are registered in the register of mineral deposits are deemed mineral resources in Estonia.
