Lithuania’s mineral resources diminishing steadily

BC, Vilnius, 21.06.2016.Print version
Lithuania’s mineral resources, which were explored three decades ago and are mainly used in road building and construction industries, are approaching depletion and the difficult-to-meet environmental and ownership requirements established for new exploration and production are inflating the costs of construction and road works, the Lietuvos Zinios daily reports on June 21st, cites LETA/BNS.

“The resources of sand and in particular gravel in Lithuania were explored before 1990 and they are almost depleted now whereas the scale of new exploration is tiny. Although we have rather large deposits of both sand and gravel, it’s very difficult to use these resources,” Jonas Satkunas, director of the Lithuanian Geological Survey told the daily.

Tadas Survila of Kelprojektas, Lithuania’s transport infrastructure engineering company, said that resources from best explored sand and gravel fields in Lithuania had been used up long ago. The company received approximately 20 orders to explore new areas and assess their resources each year but those were mainly small areas near existing sites, he added.
