Lithuania expects to limit power from Astravyets NPP in 2018

BC, Vilnius, 16.06.2016.Print version
Lithuania expects that the Nord Pool electricity market will start limiting electricity supplies from the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant in 2018, the planned date of completion of the 1st nuclear block, informs LETA/BNS.

During its meeting on June 15th, the Lithuanian government endorsed the embargo plan prepared by the Energy Ministry for electricity produced at the Astravyets plant and third countries. In mid-May, the parliament urged the government to endorse the embargo plan.

"The plan envisages two complementary alternatives: the first one is to synchronize the power networks with continental Europe and the second one is to impose commercial limitations upon entrance of electricity by then," Mantas Dubauskas, spokesman for Lithuania's energy minister, told BNS.

Under the plan, the Baltic States will synchronize their national electricity grids with continental Europe by 2025.

In May, the Lithuanian parliament passed a resolution on possible threats of the Astravyets nuclear facility under construction merely 50 km from Vilnius – this was a signal of Lithuania's plans to bar electricity generated in the plant.
