Tests show no pollution in Lithuania after explosion at Belarus' nitrogen plant

BC, Vilnius, 10.06.2016.Print version
Tests conducted in Lithuania have shown no pollution in the water of the river Nemunas after a recent explosion at a nitrogen plant in Belarus' western city of Grodno, the Environment Ministry said reported LETA/BNS on June 10th.

North-west air masses prevailed in Lithuania on June 6 through 9 and, therefore, pollutants from the accident side were unlikely to be carried into the country's air basin, the ministry said.

An air quality station in southern Lithuania has registered no air pollutants such as ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen following the accident in the neighboring country, it said.

It was reported at the start of this week, based on information from Belarus' Ministry of Emergency Situations, when an explosion had occurred at a unit of the Grodno plant, which produces ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, and urea. A large cloud of smoke hovered over the city for some time.
