Klaipedos Nafta: Croatia may delay LNG terminal project

Croatia's government crisis may delay the implementation of the country's liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in which Lithuania's state-controlled energy terminals operator Klaipedos Nafta (Klaipeda Oil) wants to participate, reports LETA/BNS.

Klaipedos Nafta CEO Mantas Bartuska says that, first of all, the government has to make up its mind on the project.

"This may affect project implementation deadlines, but the state must answer whether or not they want the project to be carried out," Bartuska told BNS.

"There is a project company in Croatia that is carrying out the preparatory work, but support from the state is necessary for a successful implementation of the project. We are watching the situation and will assess it, but state support can be ensured if the political things are sorted out there," he said.

The energy ministries of the two countries planned to sign a memorandum on cooperation in energy during a planned visit by Croatia's president to Lithuania this week. However, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic has postponed her visit due to the government crisis.

Croatia is discussing whether to build an onshore LNG facility or a terminal based on the FSRU technology. Both the Lithuanian and Croatian LNG terminals are regarded by the European Commission as strategic EU energy projects.
