Developer now eyeing Paldiski as location for pump storage power plant in Estonia
"It seems to us that the town of Paldiski is interested in developing its economic environment and industry several times more than the municipality of Joelahtme. Besides Paldiski is one of the few geologically suitable locations for the establishment of a pumped storage power plant. Therefore were are now focusing on preparing a detailed plan there," Energiasalv board member Peep Siitam told BNS on Monday.
Siitam said that after more than eight years of negotiations with the Joelahtme municipality they have arrived at the conclusion that successful completion of the procedure of approval of a detailed plan and obtaining the subsequent authorizations at Joelahtme is unlikely.
He added though that the plan to set up the plant at Muuga in the Joelahtme municipality has not yet been abandoned completely because of the amount of time and money already invested there.
Energiasalv has sent an inquiry to the minister of finance asking if it would be possible to build a pumped storage power plant in Paldiski on the basis of a detailed plan or a special plan would be necessary.
The design of the plant envisages underground storage facilities with a capacity allowing the 500 megawatt plant to work for 12 hours without interruption. The pumped storage power plant would function as a balancer of the power system and regulator of the work of wind farms.
