Lithuanian MEP: Belarus' opposition looks to Europe for help regarding unsafe NPP

BC, Vilnius, 25.04.2016.Print version
Petras Austrevicius, a Lithuanian member of the European Parliament who took part in a discussion on the Astravyets nuclear power plant in Minsk on April 22nd, says that the political opposition in Belarus is "at a loss" as the government is pushing the project forward and expects help and advice from Europe, informs LETA/BNS.

"Their genuine concern about the Astravyets NPP project and its impact on energy, environmental protection and human health does not need to be doubted, but it needs to be stated that the opposition is quite at a loss, because the authorities spare no effort to push the project forward. Great political and financial efforts have been thrown. Seeing all these developments, they (the opposition) are looking to us for certain understanding and advice on what to do," he told BNS.

Austrevicius admitted that Lithuania had also made a mistake by not taking sufficient efforts to make the project part of the EU agenda.

"This is our fault, too. As an EU member country, we had to make the Astravyets issue part of the European agenda a long time ago. This is not a bilateral matter between Lithuania and Belarus. It is a matter of safety of the EU and its citizens. We made a mistake by not taking sufficient efforts. We have to admit it and try to rectify it," he said.
