After gas market opened, very possible that Latvijas Gaze will have competition

BC, Riga, 05.03.2016.Print version
After the gas market is opened in April of 2017, it is very possible that joint-stock gas supply company Latvijas Gaze will have competition from neighboring countries, Public Utilities Commission chairman Rolands Irklis told LETA in an interview.

''It is completely possible that LG will have competition from neighboring countries when the gas market is opened, taking into account that Lithuania and Estonia already now are alternative gas suppliers. I also do not rule out that suppliers from our neighboring countries are already looking towards offering their service here,'' Irklis believes.

Irklis also points out that liquified natural gas is capable of competing with gas imported from Russia. For example, in Lithuania, Gazprom already is not the main gas supplier anymore.

''It is true that liquified natural gas was more expensive than the gas supplied by Gazprom last year, however, the situation is changing at the moment. According to available information, Statoil has signed a gas supply agreement with Lithunia's LitGas for a substantially lower price,'' he said.
