Latvian gas storage facility, pipelines to Lithuania, Estonia – EU’s prioritized gas projects

Expansion of the Incukalns underground gas storage facility in Latvia and gas pipelines from Latvia to Lithuania and Estonia are on the European Commission's list of 14 priority projects aimed at protecting the EU against natural gas supply disruptions and reducing dependence on Russian gas, informs LETA/BNS.

Also on the list of prioritized gas infrastructure projects in the construction of the Gas Interconnector Poland-Lithuania (GIPL), the Estonian-Finnish gas pipeline BalticConnect and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Estonia.

 

Ausra Nariciute of the European Commission's representation in Lithuania told BNS: “The Commission plans to adopt and publish a comprehensive LNG strategy on Feb. 16 along with its energy security package."

 

The 14 projects on the European Commission's list are intended to secure the EU against gas supply disruptions and lessen dependence on Russian gas.

 

The six above projects have been included in the group of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP).
