Cheaper Swedish electricity reaches Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 11.02.2016.Print version
Cheaper Swedish electricity, supplied from Sweden as part of maximum capacity testing of NordBalt, a power interconnection between Lithuania and Sweden, has reached Lithuania’s electricity market on February 10th, informs LETA/BNS.

Starting from 11 a.m., electricity was transmitted from Sweden to Lithuania at 70 megawatts (MW), according to the data made available by electricity transmission system operator Litgrid.

Data from the Nord Pool power exchange has shown that electricity in Sweden’s fourth bidding area, from which electricity is exported to Lithuania, cost 19.95 euros per MWh on Wednesday. At the same time, the price of electricity in Lithuania was 29.73 euros per MWh.

NordBalt, which was completed last November, began trial operations on Feb. 1 at 30 MW. It is planned that the interconnection will start normal operations in the spring.

The 550-million-euro, 453-kilometer NordBalt is Lithuania's first electricity link to Sweden. The link will operate at a capacity of up to 700 MW, which is sufficient to meet the needs of about a half of Lithuanian consumers on a moderate winter day.
