Elering: Russia cannot fine us when we leave their grid

BC, Tallinn, 06.10.2015.Print version
Allegedly Russia might want to submit a bill to the Baltic countries in case they leave the common power grid, which Estonian power grid Elering says cannot be done, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

According to the allegations spreading in the media, the matter concerns BRELL, common transmission system of Russia, Belarus and the Baltic States. In case of withdrawal from the system, Russia is forced to build new transmission lines for itself. The plan is to submit the 2.5 billion euro bill to the Baltic countries.

Estonian grid operator Elering said these claims are incomprehensible, because the existing contracts oblige only to inform of such decisions. Elering's manager Taavi Veskimägi said that they hope to disconnect from the Russian electricity grid by 2030 latest, but no fines will have to be paid for it.

"We have the rights and obligations determined. These agreements prescribe the obligation to inform and coordinate, but certainly no compensations or financial obligations," said Veskimägi.
