Pomerants: global agreement is the only way of solving climate change related challenges

BC, Tallinn, 21.09.2015.Print version
Estonian Environment Minister Marko Pomerants said that a global agreement is the only way to resolve climate change-related challenges, the ministry's press service reports LETA.

The extraordinary meeting of EU environment ministers decided on Friday in Brussels that in order to conclude the Paris climate agreement, states need clear greenhouse gas reduction commitments, and a regular review obligation and transparent reporting system have to be launched.

It is clear that mitigation of climate change cannot be addressed if countries do not have clear and measurable goals, the ministry said. Therefore, for Estonia the EU's key position that the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions must be for binding for all countries participating in the pact. "It gives a clear signal to the governments, the markets and the people that the parties to the agreement are committed to mitigating climate change," the minister said.

Estonia has also stressed that the global climate agreement to be born in December has to aim at a long-term action plan based on positions of scientists.
