Minister: Skonto buve’s actions border on sabotage

BC, Riga, 04.09.2015.Print version
Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister Kaspars Gerhards (All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK) believes that Skonto buve’s actions regarding the liquidation of acid waste ponds in Incukalns are now bordering on sabotage, the minister's advisor Oskars Vizbulis told LETA.

The Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry fully supports the State Environmental Service, which recently took the project over from Skonto buve, as now all matters concerning liquidation of the acid waste ponds are harmonized with the ministry. But the latest move by Skonto buve, erecting a fence around property managed by the Environmental Service, borders on sabotage, believes Gerhards.

Averting threats to the environment and squandering of state money requires covering the ponds with a special waterproof film before the fall, emphasizes Gerhards.

The dispute between Skonto buve and the Environmental Service has been ongoing since the beginning of the summer. On August 28, the Environmental Service posted guards at the area, which Skonto buve said was a criminal offence, and the company turned to the State Police asking that a criminal process be launched.

The Riga Northern District Court has accepted Skonto buve’s EUR 1.85 million lawsuit against the Environmental Service.

Previously the Environmental Service declined to pay EUR 1.8 million to Skonto buve for job done at Incukalns this past March.

Earlier this week, Skonto buve began to put a fence around the area, and not allowing other persons to enter the site.
