Ventspils already stepping on Klaipeda's LNG heels

Klaipeda University Professor Vytautas Paulauskas believes that it is crucial for energy company AB Klaipedos Nafta to build the inland liquefied natural gas (LNG) distribution station in time, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaru ekspresas.

Gas is being used as alternative fuel more frequently.

However, Ventspils, a port city in Latvia, is already stepping on Klaipeda's heels. Director General of Western Shipyard (AB Vakarau Laivu Gamykla) says more vessels would be fuelled by gas if the process was not slowed down by the lack of necessary infrastructure on shore.

The requirement for ships sailing in the Baltic and North Seas, the English Channel and near the American coast to use fuel with lower sulphur content entered into force on 1 January 2015. In other regions the requirement is planned to be introduced in 2018 and 2020.

The professor says, however, that these are only plans and it is unclear if they are going to be introduced for sure because many countries are not ready yet.
