The prime minister stressed that bridging the energy infrastructure with Sweden and Western Europe is Lithuania's national priority, therefore, the most important task for the time being is to complete the construction on time and start operations.

"Since we are a small market the new power link will help to improve competitiveness," Butkevicius is quoted in the Government's press release.

According to Lithuania's Minister of Energy Rokas Masiulis, the energy link project will not only ensure a lower electricity price but will also allow strengthening the security of electricity supply.

"The most expensive is the kind of energy that our consumers failed to get it when it was most needed. This is why we have to ensure energy security both in our country and in the region. This is the purpose of the ongoing energy projects. Once the NordBalt links with Sweden and LitPol Link with Poland are completed our dependence on Russian electricity suppliers will decrease," the minister said.

The first electricity bridge with Sweden will start to operate in December. The capacity of the 453km interconnection will be 700 MW, which is equal to the amount of electricity consumed in Lithuania in a hot summer day.

In the long term the NordBalt will bring benefits not only for the business and industry purchasing the electricity in the market and consuming about 70 percent of the electricity consumed in Lithuania but for all electricity consumers as well.
