Lithuanian energy minister: Visaginas NPP is a regional project

BC, Vilnius, 15.04.2015.Print version
Lithuanian Energy Minister Rokas Masiulis has denied the recent rumours that Lithuania allegedly is considering the option of building the Visaginas nuclear power plant (NPP) without Latvia and Estonia, only with Japan's Hitachi, reports LETA/ELTA.

"Right now, we look at the project as a joint project of the Baltic States; such was a cross-party agreement in Lithuania and this is a project of three countries. We are currently in the second part of the total three parts of the project. The project is being coordinated with our partners in Latvia and Estonia. We see it as a regional project and this is what we are working on," Masiulis told the radio Ziniu Radijas.

The minister did not agree that the neighbouring countries' position on the economic part of the project indirectly shows their little interest in taking part in the NPP construction.

"I would not say so. It is a large-scale and complicated project, which needs to be evaluated in a very responsible manner and many questions need to be answered first. There can be various statements made during the negotiations stage but we still have to work methodically until all of the questions are answered. I would not like to draw any foregone conclusions. We should keep on working on the project," said the minister, refusing to give his personal opinion on the NPP project.
