Europarlament Committee didn’t support exception regarding oil shale power stations

European Parliament Science, Industry and Energy Committee did not support the exception Estonia had requested regarding oil shale-powered power plants, which may lead to Estonia having to install very expensive filters in the two power plants using oil shale or close the plants by 2035, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Europarliament's Science, Industry and Energy Committee voted namely upon a directive, which sets limits on air pollution.

"This directive sets limits regarding dust particles and sulphur dioxide. It is important for Estonia, because there is a lot of dust in the emissions of the cogeneration plants using biomass," Estonia's European Parliament member Kaja Kallas explained.

"Since also many Nordic countries had the same problem, we managed to get the dust topic off the agenda, i.e. an exception was made regarding that," she added.

The committee did not support the exception regarding oil shale stations that Estonia had requested.

"Estonia now has two choices to consider. Either to make very expensive investments in the filters of two power stations using oil shale or close these stations by 2035," said Kallas.
